Tangier Classic
Type: Chesapeake
Region: Southern
Location: Jane’s Island State Park

My buddy Zach invited me to fish the Tangier classic with him this past weekend 9/27 -9/28. We camped at Jane’s Island State Park and fished the area. Catching on Fri was sparse, although we scored a striped bass, a bluefish and some trout at the south end of Hazard Island. The second day we fished Clump Island, Cider Island with little to no success. We then moved up to a spot that Zach fished years before. Up at Deal Island. He remembered a cut with a deeper hole that held fish. We fished it with success, catching the majority of our fish there. Bluefish and trout. We fished the reef out of Crisfield too. A bluefish, small back sea bass and Zach scooted the largest toadfish we’d ever seen.

Over the two days of fishing we caught some 15 bluefish, a slew of lizardfish, twenty or so specked trout, and a few sea bass and spot.

I spoke to a friend who’s heavy into speckled trout, he said it was still early in fall to see the big ones. Hence we caught mostly 11”s and under. In a week or so the big fish will push the smaller fish out, and the striped bass will show up too. So there is still time for bigger speckled trout this fall.
