Point Lookout
Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Point Lookout State Park

Last evening I decided that I would fish (somewhere) today 11/29. Waking up I had picked between hunting pickerel or striped bass off Point Lookout. Checking the weather, tides, and wind I chose striped bass, because of the limited reach and access to them by kayak. Conditions were right.

Catching pickerel are a much easier prey to target than stripers due to my limited range on a kayak. And I’ll chase them another time.

Anyway, I got to Point Lookout around 11:30, on the water at noon, then made my way out to water 40-48’ and hoping to see fish in deeper water. I stopped at a few hard bottom zones but saw no fish. Nor in the deeper waters. This ate up most of my allotted time. Needing to be back home my 2-2:30.

So, I headed to the point/lighthouse. I pulled two baits as I headed over. Catching one striped bass along the way in 23’ of water. Catching on a 2oz blade bait. I noticed birds on the shoal, but my thought was that bait was pushed up by the waves and the birds were taking advantage.

Once there, the birds were moving quickly following the bait. So I headed over the shallows. 2.5’ and birds working. Then 4’ and 8’. Surely there couldn’t possibly be stripers under them. But I was wrong, I took a cast and hooked up then another (I took long casts because of the shallow and crystal clear water). Catching on jig and jerks shad.

I was out of time, promising to be back home on time, I turned away from the fish and made my way back to the ramp. Water temperature was 47.50 degrees.
