Conowingo Dam Fishing

Type: Nontidal
Region: Northern
Location: Conowingo Dam

This weekend I tried something new (Conowingo Dam Fishing). After talking with several fellow anglers about trying to catch something different then catfish and small perch. The site Conowingo Dam kept coming up. You have to try fishing there! Huge rockfish, perch, small/large mouth bass and of course catfish are caught there on a regular basis. So this past weekend I went and I was astonished by what I saw. People were catching their daily quota of two 18 inch Rockfish within an hour and leaving. It was so systematic. This was a different style of fishing for me. I was use to putting a line in and wait for a fish to come by and get hooked. This was totally different. These anglers were hunting for prey with fishing equipment that was unfamiliar to me. In line sinkers, crank baits and long casting rods that put there baited hooks in the white running water area. One of the biggest things that jump out at me was that 8 anglers casting 7 ft apart at the same time and they did not get tangled up at all. These anglers knew what they were doing! After taking some observation time ( two hours) and asking question about equipment and bait selection. I decided to give it a try. I lost my rig four times in an hour. But an experience angler seen in below pics took me to the side and showed me the light. I caught my first Conowingo fish an 15 inch perch. I plan on going back there next weekend after I get the right equipment so I too can get my daily 2 ROCKFISH quota!
