Biologist Report from the Tidal Gunpowder River

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Central
Location: Gunpowder River

On, July 20, 2011, Central Region Biologist Mark Staley and I accompanied Joe Love, Tidal Bass Manager to the Tidal region of the Gunpowder River. We started out of Mariner Point Park in Joppatowne, MD. Our main goal was to determine the spawning success of Largemouth Bass in this portion of the river. We were also interested in seeing adult Bass and looking at their size and condition. The survey showed Largemouth reproduction success at all sites. While surveying we found large numbers of Adult White Perch, Juvenile Gizzard Shad, and Adult Carp. A fair amount of White Perch surveyed in the morning were around 10 inches. We also encountered some Yellow Perch Juveniles and Adults. One local resident stated that since Memorial Day he has had blue crabs in his pots. The pictures below are of 1 Adult bass seen as well as a few White Perch and Yellow Perch surveyed during the afternoon.
