The fishing in the lake has been tough in the hot weather. I'm getting a few small bass and panfish on topwater lures early in the morning and later in the evening.
While cruising around the shore I noticed some type of growth or mass on some of the submerged trees in the lake. I asked around the park but nobody seems to know what they are. They aren't the best pictures but you can get an idea of what they are. I've been in many lakes in Maryland and have never seen this before. Any idea what it is?
DNR's Reponse, Biologist Susan Rivers: This is most likely a colony of Bryozoa, they look gelatinous but are not, this mass looks to be very solid, so we believe it is a Bryozoan colony. The round units in the photos are individual organisms. These are commonly found in freshwater, usually in lake habitats, but not frequently seen. The colonies grow on other structures.
