Hit the Upper Potomac Sunday night looking for the Walleye bite. I was fishing the mouth of a smaller spring feed creek and noticed numerous large suckers in very shallow water where the creek enters the Potomac. Normally when I see suckers they are stationary or slowly cruising but these fish seemed to be feeding, their tails were slightly up and they were stirring up the fine sand and mud with their mouths. Ive tried fishing for suckers on and off over the last few years and have never managed to land more then one at a time and never saw the fish take the bait. I had a few micro jigs on me so I figured what the heck. I flipped a few rocks to find a worm and tipped the jig with a bit of crawler. Sight fishing I pitched the jig and positioned it in the path of the fish, to my surprise they went right for it, the take was very subtle I would not have known that the fish took the jig had I not seen it. The fight of the suckers impressed me while not as strong as a Carp they made quick determined runs and one even went air born. I included pictures of the three I fair hooked. I fouled two others mistiming the hook set. Its always fun to try to figure out a new species, later I even managed a few Walleye as well on a Rapala. All fish where released.
