On Monday, we went to the ASMFC meeting, and we listened to the lobster and striped bass portions. The lobster issue was discussed first. They talked about how the lobster population has been depleted, and they voted on a solution to decrease the exploitation of the lobster fishery by 10% as the first step. After the vote, the board members discussed striped bass and debated reducing the eastern seaboards striped bass harvest by 40%. They voted to postpone taking action on the matter until the striped bass stock assessment comes in later this year. The vote was 14-2 with only Maine and New Hampshire voting against the proposal. The rest of the week we realized the mundane tasks that come with every job, like entering data from fieldwork, or stuffing envelopes destined for commercial waterman.
