Trout Fishing and Nice Largemouth at Lake Elkhorn
Type: Nontidal
Region: Central
Location: Elkhorn Lake
April 21st, Dad and I started the day trout fishing in PG County at Schoolhouse and Melwood Ponds and did fairly well. We checked out Lake Artemesia in College Park but the limited access due to grass and lilypads made our stay short. We made our way up to Howard County with the intent to check out some rivers but instead ended up at Elkhorn lake in Columbia. The lake was last stocked the 9th so hopes for trout were slim. We switched gears and started catching crappie and small largemouths on kastmasters. I put a number 6 hook on and a night crawler and started slow retreaving the bottom when I hooked a beautiful fat largemouth, which I relased quickly after the photo op. I still had my ultra lite ugly stick with 4lb stren. The fight lasted a while and was a lot of fun, except for when the fish went for straight under the floating dock. Despite Lake Elkhorn being dredged recently, it is producing! Check it out.
